Some bus stop signs in the Saddletowne, Northeast and North Central areas have not yet been updated following our fall service changes, which began on August 31. CTrain Service Information

Sept 5-7: City Hall/Bow Valley College to Marlborough closure

Affected routes: Blue Line

Affected stations: City Hall/Bow Valley College, Bridgeland/Memorial, Zoo, Barlow/Max Bell, Franklin, Marlborough

Affected service hours:
Saturday, September 5 (all day)
Sunday, September 6 (all day)
Monday, September 7 (all day)

What to expect:

The Blue Line will be closed between City Hall/Bow Valley College and Marlborough stations starting on Saturday, September 5 until the very early hours of Tuesday, September 8.

Trains coming from the west and downtown will terminate at City Hall/Bow Valley College Station. And trains from the northeast will terminate at Marlborough. For all those stations in between, we’ll have three shuttle bus routes replacing train service:  

  1. Regular CTrain Replacement Shuttle buses will visit all stations from City Hall/Bow Valley College to Marlborough - except Zoo Station (see #3).

  2. EXPRESS Shuttle buses will provide direct service between City Hall/Bow Valley College and Marlborough stations only, with no other stops in between. These will run alongside the regular shuttle service.

  3. Customers heading to Zoo Station will need to catch a separate shuttle from Bridgeland/Memorial Station (shuttle stop located a block north of the station, on 9 St NE just south of McDougall Rd NE) – this shuttle will travel between Zoo and Bridgleand/Memorial only, running every 20 minutes.

There will be no impact to the Red Line CTrain at City Hall/Bow Valley College Station. Full CTrain service will be back up and running again on the Blue Line by start of service on Tuesday, September 8.


Pride Parade Day, Sept 6:
On Sunday, September 6, there will be detours downtown due to the parade. The shuttle service stops at City Hall/Bow Valley College Station will be moved to a single stop on 5 Ave SE for the day. The shuttle service schedule for City Hall/Bow Valley College is as follows 

  • Saturday, Sept. 5  &  Monday, Sept. 7:
    Catch the regular CTrain replacement and Express shuttles from separate stops at City Hall/Bow Valley College Station (see maps linked below)
  • Sunday, Sept. 6 ONLY:
    Catch both shuttles from a single stop, next to the pedestrian overpass on 5 Ave SE, just east of Macleod Tr SE, until the end of the parade. Once the roads re-open, the original shuttle stops will be reactivated at City Hall/Bow Valley College Station.

Only the CTrain shuttle stops at City Hall will be impacted by these specific detours on Sunday, and the CTrain replacement shuttles will follow their usual routing outside of downtown.


Labour Day Classic:
On Monday, September 7 the Stampeders host the Edmonton Elks at McMahon Stadium for the CFL Labour Day Classic. If you’re planning on taking transit to the game, please make sure to plan ahead and give yourself some extra time. Use our trip planner to find the best route, so you don’t miss a thing!

Why are we doing this?

This long weekend, we have a number of repair and maintenance projects on the list, including:

  • Installation of new flashing lights and other enhancements at the Deerfoot crossing,
  • Cleaning and outside maintenance at stations,
  • Electrical work including line insulator and impedance bond replacements,
  • Lighting upgrades on the right-of-way,
  • Glass replacement at Franklin Station,
  • 36th Street tunnel inspections and repairs,
  • and other projects, as time allows.

Why are we doing all of these closures?

We know CTrain closures can have an impact on your travel, which is why we try to keep them as minimally disruptive as possible. That’s also why they’re so important - because doing preventative work and maintenance now can ensure we’re providing Calgarians with a safe, reliable, and efficient transit system.

Some work can be completed while keeping the trains on track, but there are certain projects that are just too big, or can’t share the space safely while trains are in service, and they require fully closing off sections of the line. Occasionally, a power cut is required to carry out specific work, which also means we need to close the line to train travel.

During the planning stage, we try to consolidate projects where can to minimize how often we need to close a certain section of the system, and do our best to plan around major events or times of heaviest transit use. Wherever possible, we will opt for single tracking instead, to further reduce impact to service.

What is “single tracking”?

When considering the work that needs to be done at (or between) specific stations, we’ll look into whether closing just one side of the tracks is a safe, effective, and available option. Also known as “single tracking”, this type of closure allows us to complete the important work while also keeping train traffic moving!

Trains travelling in either direction will share the same track and same side of the station/platform.

So, when this happens, keep an eye on the station’s digital displays, and an ear out for the PA announcements to make sure you’re in the right spot - and don’t forget to double check the train’s destination display before hopping on!
