Ride Calgary Transit with confidence and independence

Travel training is short-term, hands-on instruction designed to teach people with disabilities to travel safely and independently on public transportation.

The program provides individuals with the tools and confidence they need to use Calgary Transit services on their own. Whether you’re learning to navigate routes, understand fare systems, or use accessibility features, our Travel Trainers are here to help.

One-on-One Travel Training

One-on-one sessions with a Travel Trainer provide personalized guidance to help you learn to use Calgary Transit on your own.

Our Travel Trainers can help you:

  • Plan trips using Calgary Transit routes and schedules
  • Understand fare payment options and tools
  • Learn safety tips for riding buses and CTrains
  • Use accessibility features such as ramps, priority seating and securement areas

What to expect:

  • Three to five sessions tailored to your goals and comfort level
  • Real-world practice on buses and CTrains
  • Support available year-round across the city

Transit Agency Program Support (TAPS)

TAPS is a virtual workshop for agency staff who support clients needing help to travel independently. It gives your team the tools to teach and assess transit skills.

  • Calgary Transit Access (CTA) eligibility requirements
  • Strategies for teaching and evaluating travel skills
  • Practical tips for navigating buses and CTrains safely
  • How to apply real-world, hands-on teaching approaches with clients

Sessions run 2-3 hours via Microsoft Teams. Participants receive a free monthly bus pass in exchange for sharing service usage data.

Get on Board Summer Camp

Get on Board Summer Camp offers youth aged 15–21 with disabilities a fun, skill-building experience to build confidence using transit.

At camp, participants:

  • Take part in interactive learning and transit safety activities
  • Gain hands-on experience using buses and CTrains
  • Enjoy behind-the-scenes transit experiences and tours

Presentations

We deliver presentations for schools, community groups and organizations. Sessions can be customized for youth with disabilities, seniors, caregivers and service providers.

Examples include:

  • Seniors’ transit education sessions
  • Calgary Transit Access (CTA) overview
  • Calgary Transit classroom sessions and transit safety talks

Tours and Orientations

Tours and orientations provide hands-on learning with Calgary Transit vehicles and facilities. These experiences are ideal for riders, families and support workers who benefit from seeing and practising skills in real settings.

Examples include:

  • Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility tours, featuring the CTrain simulator and a behind-the-scenes look at how our trains are maintained and operated.
  • Vehicle and low-floor bus orientations for customers using mobility devices, including help with boarding, securing mobility devices, and using on-board accessibility features (open to anyone; referrals are common).
  • Specialized tours for youth with low or no vision, including practice locating stop buttons, using accessible seating and understanding safety features.

Community Events

Travel Trainers participate in community events to promote transit safety, accessibility and independence.

At these events, our team:

  • Provides interactive demonstrations
  • Answers questions about Calgary Transit and Calgary Transit Access (CTA)
  • Shares resources to help individuals and families feel confident using transit
  • Highlights programs like One-on-one Travel Training and Get on Board Summer Camp
