Sunnyside Pedestrian Crossings: Enhanced for Safety and Accessibility

The Sunnyside Pedestrian Crossings upgrades are now complete, with the new gates officially in service as of July 27, 2025. These enhancements are part of our commitment to improving how customers move through Calgary Transit spaces—making them safer, easier to navigate, and more inclusive.
What’s New?
The Sunnyside crossings have been upgraded with several improvements, including:
- Automatic gate arms to help manage pedestrian flow
- Emergency swing gates for added protection
- Wider crossing surfaces for smoother movement
- Tactile surfaces and wheelchair ramps to support accessibility
- Cane-detectable features to assist visually impaired pedestrians
- LED indicators and upgraded lighting for better visibility
- Modern control systems for improved reliability
- Enhanced CCTV coverage to support safety
Preparing the Area
Before installation, several changes were made to get the crossings ready:
- Community feedback helped shape the final design—thanks to public input, the existing canopies were kept and the design was adapted around them
- Relocation and adjustment of equipment like train lights, signals, and snow removal sheds
- Widening of crossings with new planks for smoother access
- Demolition and repositioning of stairs and fencing to make space for the new layout
These upgrades are designed to improve safety and accessibility for all CTrain customers. Thank you for your patience during construction.
