The Government of Canada recently passed legislation to make September 30 a federal holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This was done to provide an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of Indian Residential Schools and to honour the survivors, their families, and communities. Similar legislation was not passed in Alberta; however, the province is allowing individual organizations to make their own decisions on whether to observe the day or not.
This year, transit service will run as usual on September 30, except for school bus routes, which will be suspended for the day. Our customer service centres will remain open. Service in the years following this first National Day for Truth & Reconciliation will be based on data from this year.
