Safety, Security and Cleanliness
Calgary Transit is implementing a number of
initiatives to improve the safety, security and cleanliness of the
system
Some of the new initiatives
to enhance the safety of our customers and staff include:
In addition to the eight Peace Officers
(formerly known as Protective Services Officers) approved as part of
the 2008 business plan, Calgary Transit will hire an additional 10
officers to bring the complement to 69 officers.
Increasing the presence of Operations
Supervisors on the CTrain system from 1800 to 0200. Operations
Supervisors have increased their presence on the CTrain system
during the day, and particularly during the late evening period.
Operations Supervisors wearing distinctive yellow vests, have been
riding CTrain cars between stations to check on cleanliness and
other issues and provide a visible presence.
Calgary Transit has retained the services of
12 private security guards to enhance visible presence at CTrain
Stations between the hours of 1600 to midnight, seven days a week.
Calgary Transit has met with the Calgary
Police Service and are working on the development of a transit
system crime management strategy. As a part of this strategy, there
is now an increased presence by CPS on the NE CTrain line.
Calgary Transit and CPS will be opening an
office on the Centre Street platform scheduled to open in March.
Video cameras are being installed in the
parking lots of Franklin, Whitehorn and Brentwood Stations.
A video monitor will be installed at
Marlborough Station displaying the video feed from cameras at the
station. It is expected the presence of the video monitor will deter
criminal activity.
400 buses are being equipped with DriveCam
technology. These cameras enhance operator and customer safety.
Calgary Transit has launched a CTrain safety
awareness campaign to inform passengers how to get assistance from
our staff. The campaign features HELP intercoms on the platforms of
stations, the in-train intercoms for communication with the
operator, and the CCTV (closed-circuit television) security camera
system and our patrolling Peace Officers.
Relative to Calgary Transit Cleanliness
Initiatives….
With the approval of the 2008 budget
adjustments, Calgary Transit received 10 additional cleaning
positions which will be focused on CTrain vehicle and station
cleaning.
Calgary Transit is hiring additional
limited-term cleaning/outside maintenance staff. Staff are being
deployed on the day shifts to provide ongoing cleaning service at
CTrain stations and to provide a visible presence.
Beginning with Whitehorn Station, Calgary
Transit initiated “Operation Deep Clean.” This initiative included a
thorough deep cleaning of the station, repairs and some repainting.
“Operation Deep Clean” Phase Two will occur at
Marlborough Station with other stations on the system to follow.
