In 2007, there were
16,150 auto crimes
reported to Calgary Police of which 888 occurred
on Calgary Transit property or 5.5 per cent
of the city wide total.
When
examining statistics related only to auto theft (as
opposed to the overall auto crime total which also
includes break-ins of vehicles and thefts from
vehicles), there were 6,450 auto thefts city wide
of which 205 occurred on Calgary Transit property
or 3.2 per cent of the city wide total.
In
2007, Calgary Transit carried over 90 million riders.
The
rate of crime on the CTrain system has increased only
marginally over the past five years while ridership
during that period increased almost 16 per cent.
Over
the past four years the crimes against persons rate has
averaged 2.5 crimes per million riders on the CTrain
system. In the perfect world there would be no crime.
However, the reality is crime occurs everywhere.
Thankfully, only a fraction of total crime happens on
the CTrain system. Reported crimes per passenger are low
and have remained at this level even with significantly
growing ridership over the years.
