Safety and Security
The safety and security of its customers is of the utmost importance to Calgary Transit. To this end, an extensive security network is in place to provide assistance when needed. Calgary Transit personnel are ready to respond to all incidents such as medical emergencies, passenger harassment, acts of vandalism, or any other situations or conditions which may be considered unsafe.
Uniformed peace officers patrol the CTrain system 24 hours a day. Additionally, transit operators, supervisors, and maintenance personnel constantly use the system and are available to provide assistance.
CTrain stations and platforms are equipped with HELP phones and are under 24 hour surveillance by trained Calgary Transit staff who visually monitor over 300 closed circuit cameras placed strategically throughout the system. Security monitoring staff are in direct radio contact with peace officers and transit supervisors and can quickly dispatch them or other emergency services personnel such as police, ambulance or fire.
Transport Canada, through the Transit Secure program, funded the installation of 12 Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras to provide enhanced surveillance capacities.
| Surveillance cameras may be operating in CTrain stations, CTrain parking lots, Plus 15s and buses to deter and detect criminal activity, and to maintain public safety. The collection of recorded camera images is authorized under section 33(c) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). If you have any questions about this surveillance, please contact Calgary Transit’s Call Centre at 262-1000. |
Calgary Transit Addressing Safety and Cleanliness Concerns
Calgary Transit operates a very safe transit system and is continuing to proactively address concerns relating to safety, security and cleanliness.
In 2008, Calgary Transit renewed its focus on safety and security of its customers and staff and strengthened existing initiatives. New projects were also implemented to ensure the continued safety of the system, our customers and our employees.
Initiatives to make the system safer and even more secure included:
- Recruiting and training additional Peace Officers
- Installing pan-tilt-zoom cameras at select locations
- Hiring a crime data analyst to optimize deployment of Peace Officers
- Increasing the number of outside maintenance staff responsible for station cleaning
- Conducting “Operation Deep Clean” at many CTrain stations
Strengthening the focus on safety and security will continue in 2009 and beyond.
2009 initiatives include hiring nine additional Peace Officers and 15 additional cleaning staff, improved surveillance camera technology at CTrain stations, increased lighting at CTrain Stations, surveillance cameras installed on the entire bus fleet, increased security system checks, continued deep cleaning of stations and the 7th Avenue refurbishment program.
A recent Calgary Transit public safety audit conducted by Intervistas Consulting Inc. concludes “fundamentally there are good practices advanced by Calgary Transit to deal with public safety issues that are at or above the norms of comparable operators.”
The recent introduction of a $3.00 per day parking fee at Calgary Transit parking lots will generate funds that will further enhance safety, security and cleanliness of the system today and in future.

CTrain Safety Features
Standard features on the CTrain which are in effect when customers are boarding and disembarking from the train:
- Sensitive edges at the centre of the doors which will cycle the doors open on objects 22 millimeters (or 7/8ths of an inch) thick or greater
- A photo-electric beam near floor level. This beam recycles the door open when the beam is interrupted
- When the light on the door button is off, the doors will not open and safety features are not active.
- As long as the train doors are open the train cannot move
- An automatic three-second delay that keeps the train at the platform after the doors are closed
- Heated rear view mirrors to give operators clearer vision of the platforms in all weather conditions
To improve customer safety, Calgary Transit has equipped every CTrain car with the Transit Help Intercom System, which provides two-way communication between the customer and CTrain operator in case of emergency.
Each CTrain car has eight intercom buttons should an emergency arise. Press the help button until it clicks into place and when the green light comes on clearly explain the situation to the CTrain operator. The operator will provide you with further instructions, radio for assistance if required, or stop at the next station and go to where you are.
At the edge of every CTrain platform is a yellow line. This provides you with a safe clearance from arriving trains and train mirrors. Always stand behind the yellow line until your train comes to a full stop.
When boarding the train:
- Please let other customer exit before you board
- Never stick your arm, leg, briefcase or any object into the closing doors
- Never try to pry the doors open
- After boarding, please move toward the centre of the car
On the train
- Inside every CTrain you'll see yellow lines, plus signs that advise you to stay clear of the door areas These provide you with a safe clearance from the doors as they open inward
When leaving the train
- Please move toward a doorway before the train arrives at your stop
- To open the doors, use the interior door button located on the grab rail at each doorway. When the doors are ready to open, this button will light up and display the "Press to open door" message
