December 7 Service Changes: Routes 102, 103, 117, 133 and 151
On August 31 2009, Calgary Transit introduced a number of bus route changes in southeast Calgary to provide better connections between southeast communities, employment areas and the downtown. These changes included the addition of Route 302 Southeast BRT and revisions to local and express buses to support these service objectives. As well, express routes were taken off Deerfoot Trail to improve service reliability.
As a result, many express bus customers have expressed concerns related to increased travel time. There has been considerable investigation into your feedback.
Travel time comparisons
In response to passenger concerns and to evaluate the new service changes, Calgary Transit has conducted an online customer survey, extensive time trials and passenger counts. Thank you for your patience and feedback; here is what we learned:
- Prior to the route changes, many buses were arriving at their destinations about 10 minutes ahead of schedule on days when Deerfoot Trail was flowing freely. After the route changes, most buses are arriving about 10 minutes late. So for some trips the travel time difference is now about 20 minutes.
- Travel along Deerfoot Trail (when there are no disruptions) is generally faster than the Southeast BRT route before 6:30 am and before 4:30 pm.
- An alternate route that would bypass Quarry Park using Barlow Trail and Shepard Road was found to be about 3 minutes faster than along Southeast BRT, but it is subject to delay and is will become slower as construction of a rail overpass near 50 Avenue S starts this spring.
- The Southeast BRT routing, although slower, is very consistent in terms of travel time.
Customer survey feedback:
155 passengers responded to our handout and online survey:
- Many passengers (35) said that they were pleased with the revised service and route.
- The majority of passengers (120) agreed that the number of express bus stops should be reduced.
- The stop near Ogden & Glenmore Trail should be moved closer to 78 Avenue.
- Express buses should not wait at stops along the route.
NEW Service changes – Starting December 7
On Monday, December 7 the following service changes will be implemented to offer faster travel options for express bus customers on Routes: 102, 103, 117, 133 and 151.
- Some early express bus trips (am & pm) will travel via Deerfoot Trail.
- Express bus trips (am & pm) that remain on the Southeast BRT routing will make fewer stops outside of the community, serving only:
- 114 Avenue S
- Quarry Park,
- Ogden Road at 78 Avenue
