North Central LRT – May 2011 Open Houses Feedback

Thank you to the many Calgarians who attended our open house sessions — and who took the time to give us feedback. This page links to all of the responses we received from feedback forms and our online survey.

We look forward to continuing our conversation with you through the remainder of the planning study.

How did we get here?

  • In 2006, City Council approved an alignment for North Central LRT that roughly parallels Nose Creek and Deerfoot Trail along the Canadian Pacific rail line.
  • Our review of the details of this alignment revealed challenges with proximity to customers, travel times, combined operation with the Northeast LRT, and alignment with new policies like the Municipal Development Plan and Calgary Transportation Plan.
  • In May 2011, Calgary Transit asked Calgarians if they support revisiting the North Central LRT alignment — and you said yes!

What’s next?

  • This project will follow The City of Calgary’s sustainability approach, which means we’ll be considering the following perspectives:
    • Community well-being
    • Economy
    • Sustainable environment
    • Smart growth and mobility
    • Financial capacity
    • Sustainable corporation
  • Calgary Transit will ask City Council to formally support this planning project, which will require a significant investment in time and resources over the next two to three years.
  • Calgary Transit has formed a community team to help advise the project – thank you to all those who have volunteered!
  • At upcoming public meetings, we will:
    • answer some of your questions, such as, how will North Central LRT connect with Calgary’s airport and other east-west transit routes
    • confirm the evaluation criteria and your priorities; and
    • show examples of public transit from around the world that are applicable to the North Central corridor.

Future public meetings will be advertised on the Calgary Transit website (calgarytransit.com). In the meantime, for more information contact us at nclrt@calgary.ca.

Overview
Calgary Transit has started planning for the future North Central LRT – one of six LRT lines planned for Calgary, and one of two without funding. Three corridors are being considered: along Centre Street, Edmonton Trail and Nose Creek / CPR. These options will be evaluated using The City’s Sustainability Approach, so studying how NC LRT will help shape Calgary communities according to four perspectives:

  • Environment
  • Community well-being
  • Economy
  • Smart growth and mobility

Thank you to over 1200 Calgarians who came out to three open houses at the end of May to talk about the different opportunities available to Calgary, as well as the values that will guide this planning study. These are the boards that were on display. Boards created for the open houses illustrate the route options and various approaches to technology (style of transit) used in different cities which might be appropriate for Calgary. The boards also explain where Calgary Transit is in the schedule for the NC LRT project.

Why are we studying this now?
North Central LRT is not anticipated within the 20 year horizon. Knowing our ultimate plan will help guide interim decisions, including transit priority measures (like bus-only lanes or traffic signal priority) for the 1700 buses that travel along Centre Street and Edmonton Trail each day.
