Electronic Fare Collection is Coming Next Year!
No more digging for change, lining up to buy your pass or remembering your tickets…
Calgary Transit is now planning for a new electronic fare collection (EFC) system to provide you with more convenient ways to pay your transit fare. The new system will arrive summer 2012, and is one of the many new enhanced technology initiatives Calgary Transit will soon be offering to our customers.
Learn more about Connect. The EFC system centres on proven smart card technology allowing you to pay your fare with the tap of a card.
Of course, cash will always be accepted on buses and at CTrain stations, but with the new system, you have more options and more convenience!
Customers will have the choice to use a disposable, preloaded card, a reloadable card, or perhaps a key fob or pendant in the future. As you board a bus or enter a CTrain station, you simply tap your card on a new card reader and the system will deduct the fare from your card balance or recognize that you have a valid pass. In the future the card will allow you to pay for other City of Calgary services too.
On your reloadable smart card, as your balance gets lower (or you need to purchase another monthly pass, etc.), you can log into a new Calgary Transit EFC website to add value to the card (monthly passes, tickets or a monetary value).
This EFC website will also allow you to register your card and check your balance. When you register your card, you may also be eligible to receive lost card protection, negative balance protection (you can ride even if there is nothing on your card) and the ability to specify an automated purchase plan to reload your card with time (e.g. monthly passes), credits (e.g. tickets) or a monetary value.
These options will be available at participating sales merchants, through CT’s downtown customer service centre and online via the CT website in the summer of 2012.
More information will be provided as we get closer to introducing the new system..
