The temporary closure of Chinook Station will began January 14, 2013. The CTrain will continue to operate through this location but will not stop at Chinook Station. Customers are not able to board or disembark from the CTrain at Chinook Station. The bus terminal at Chinook Station has been temporarily moved to 3 Street S.W. A shuttle bus to and from 39 Avenue Station is available for customers who would like to access the CTrain system.

Bus Routes 23, 36, 41, 47, 66, 72, 73, 81, 136, 410 and the Chinook mall shuttle (Route 506) stop at the newly located bus terminal on 3 Street. Route 10 will remain on 61 Avenue SW and customers can use the stops on 61 Avenue SW and 3 Street SW. The map below shows you where you can catch your bus.

Please note that there is no parking on 3 Street SW between 58 Avenue SW and 61 Avenue SW
to accommodate the relocated bus terminal.

The new Chinook Station will have a fully accessible, at-grade track crossing to the platform located at the north side, a sloped walkway that complies with the City of Calgary Access Design Standards, a glass canopy over the platform, enhanced landscaping to the station area and an extended platform to the south that will accommodate four-car CTrains.

Thank you for your patience during reconstruction.

Questions and Answers:

Why is Chinook Station being reconstructed and not refurbished?

  • Chinook Station is approximately 31 years old. Although the station seemed like it is in good working condition, a lot of components have reached the end of their life cycle and replacing would be costly and disruptive to our customers. There was also an opportunity to reduce the operating cost of the station, improve visual surveillance of the station and improve accessibility at this heavily used station.

What is the impact on users of Calgary Transit of closing the station for 8 months?

  • The CTrain will continue to operate through Chinook Station but will not stop at Chinook Station. Customers are not able to board or disembark from the CTrain at Chinook Station. The bus terminal at Chinook Station has been temporarily moved to 3 Street S.W. A shuttle bus to and from 39 Avenue Station is available for customers who would like to access the CTrain system.

Why was the decision made to have a shuttle bus run from 39 Avenue Station and not from Heritage Station?

Other shuttle route options were considered, such as Heritage Station to Chinook Station, but it was found that the best option is to run buses from 39 Avenue Station for the following reasons:
  1. During morning rush hour a shuttle from 39 Avenue Station to Chinook is faster as the route to Chinook travels south against the flow of rush hour traffic

  2. Similarly, during the evening rush hour, the shuttle from Chinook to 39 Avenue Station travels north against the flow of rush hour traffic

  3. Having one CTrain replacement shuttle allowed Calgary Transit to dedicate resources to provide a more frequent shuttle service.

What is the cost of rebuilding the station and the cost of running shuttle busses for the 8 month duration of the construction?

The rebuild of the station and surrounding streetscaping is budgeted at $15M and the cost to run shuttle busses is budgeted at $1.5M.
