Background
Calgary
Transit introduced vinyl wrapped buses in
1995. For the first time the sides, back
and top of the vehicle are covered with
the vinyl decal, instead of the entire bus
being painted.
The computer generated vinyl
product provides photo quality images and
is the secret behind vinyl wrapping. The
material allows customers to see outside
even when the bus windows are covered.
Looking out from the bus is like looking
through a screen door.
For safety reasons, the driver's
window, front door and side window, route
markings, signals and lights are left
uncovered. The front of the bus is also
left uncovered so the vinyl wrapped buses
look like any other Calgary Transit bus
when approaching the bus stop. There
will never be more than 30 buses or CTrain
cars - or 3% of our fleet vinyl
wrapped at any one time.

Benefits
Vinyl
Advertising has several benefits:
- Each vinyl wrapped bus provides
approximately $13,200 per year in
revenue for Calgary Transit which
reduces the amount of tax support that
Calgary Transit requires. For example,
the revenue that each vinyl wrapped
bus generates per year is roughly
equivalent to the property taxes for
15
homes. (The average municipal
tax bill for a Calgary homeowner is $881.11)
- The computer generated process
allows advertisers dynamic design
options.
- Vinyl application and removal takes
only two days, rather than a five to
eight day painting process.

The
Future
Calgary
Transit will continue to monitor this
advertising product. We have solicited
feedback from Transit customers, City
employees, special-need groups, and the
general public to determine the
suitability of vinyl wrapped buses as a
safe and viable advertising product.
We have researched the product and
found that the vinyl wrapped buses do not
have an impact on traffic safety.
Calgary Transit
management approves each vinyl design to
ensure that it adheres to Canadian Code of
Advertising Standards, and Calgary Transit
safety standards.
