Universal
Pass Program
The
Calgary Transit Universal Pass (U-Pass) program was
a concept developed to provide an inexpensive
transit option for most post-secondary students. The
program began in 2001 at the Southern Alberta
Institute of Technology (SAIT). This trial proved
successful for SAIT, SAIT students, and Calgary
Transit. This success led to the program being
expanded to the University of Calgary and other
institutions.
How the Program Works
U-Pass programs work best at institutions that
have defined semester systems and a student body of
sufficient size to make the program attractive to
all. Based on enrolment and current usage of Calgary
Transit, a rate is negotiated. To be successful,
100% participation is required. This ensures that
the U-Pass can be offered at the lowest price
possible. In effect, instead of a few participants
paying regular fares for transit services, all eligible
participants pay a lower fare.
U-Pass programs also require an institutional
identification card with the participant’s
picture. Once the U-pass fee has been paid, the
Institution (often the Registrar’s office) will
affix a sticker onto the identification card. This
card now becomes your transit fare medium. Simply
show your card with valid sticker to the bus driver
or the Protective Services Officers if on the CTrain.
There are no restrictions as to day or time, and
the U-Pass provides unlimited rides.
Consistent with other fare options, a premium of
fifty cents per trip is required if using a Premium
Express Route.
