10 Street Station Closure
In order to complete the tie-in of the 7 Avenue CTrain line with the West LRT line, and to accommodate the future operation of four-car trains, the CTrain station at 10 Street will be permanently closed as of Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012. A new station is being completed at 11 Street S.W., called Downtown West-Kerby, located in front of the Kerby Centre. It will open for Calgary Transit customers when the West LRT opens for service.
The 10 Street Station needs to be closed and demolished before the Downtown West-Kerby Station opens in order to complete track re-alignment in this area, and to complete sidewalks and other finishing work.
Calgary Transit customers travelling east can access the CTrain at 8 Street Station, located between 7 and 8 Street S.W. Customers heading west will need to disembark at 7 Street Station, between 6 and 7 Street S.W. (Both stations are a short walk from 10 Street.)
Like most of the refurbished and new stations recently completed along 7 Avenue as part of the 7 Avenue Refurbishment Project, Downtown West-Kerby will be fully accessible, with the sidewalk and station platforms all on the same level. This station also features the glass and steel canopies visible at the other 7 Avenue CTrain stations.
About the 7 Avenue Refurbishment Project
The 7 Avenue Refurbishment Project will be complete in the fall of 2012. The project included constructing new stations and upgrading existing stations, with sidewalks integrated directly from adjacent buildings onto each platform. The project has also created a more pedestrian friendly environment featuring wider sidewalks, improved lighting, and enhanced streetscapes between stations. The design for the project, created by Sturgess Architecture and GEC Architecture, is nominated for an award at the World Architecture Festival to be held this October in Singapore.
