Renewable Energy

The City of Calgary has made a commitment to reduce its impact on the environment. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is part of that commitment. Through our supply agreement with ENMAX Energy, the City will be purchasing at least 75 per cent of its electricity from renewable electricity sources until 2011.

By 2012, The City plans to increase its renewable electricity purchases to 100 per cent for all of its electricity needs. Over the life of this agreement, the avoided GHG emissions are expected to be about seven million tonnes or equal to about 32,000 rail cars full of coal that won’t be needed to power City operations
