What is ISO 14001?

ISO is the International Organization for Standardization. ISO is not an acronym, ISO means "equal" in the Greek language.

ISO 14001 is an international standard that specifies a process for controlling and improving Calgary Transit's environmental performance. Calgary Transit's EnviroSystem is registered to the ISO 14001 standard.

What does ISO 14001 registration mean?

A Company that achieves ISO 14001 registration is demonstrating that it:

  • Has a sound environmental policy;
  • Has in place an effective environmental system to support its policy;
  • Is committed to complying with or exceeding environmental legislation, protecting the environment and continually improving its environmental performance.

How is ISO 14001 granted?

An independent registering body conducts an audit to ensure that Calgary Transit's EnviroSystem meets the required ISO standard. The auditing process includes regular follow-up audits to confirm that the standard is continually met and that environmental performance is improving with time.

What is an EnviroSystem?

EnviroSystem is Calgary Transit's Environmental Management System. EnviroSystem is a tool to manage the impacts of the public transportation system. EnviroSystem is an organized approach to improving environmental performance.

ISO 14001 applies basic management principles to environmental management. In its simplest form there are four parts: Plan, Do, Check, and Act.

  1. The PLAN stage in the model refers to understanding issues and requirements that relate to Calgary Transit activities.

  2. The DO stage is expressed through "Implementation and Operation"; the focus is based on prevention. The goal is to lead by example; prevent rather than correct.

  3. CHECK is expressed through Checking and Corrective Action; the focus is on reasonable care and regulatory compliance. Complying with regulations is not the only intent. The EnviroSystem flags when there is a risk of failing to comply, and ensures appropriate corrective action is taken.

  4. ACT is the final section in the model. It reflects the need for top management to review and examine the EnviroSystem, and determine if it is effective and efficient in identifying problems and solving them in a prompt and expeditious manner.

Why Register to ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 registration will further Calgary Transit's commitment to reduce the environmental impact of urban transportation.
