Calgary Transit has been investigating ways to reduce the
environmental impact of operating the Light Rail Transportation
(LRT) system.
Grease is applied to the wheels of a train before it enters
curves on the track system. This is done to reduce wear on
wheels and rails and reduce the noise level. When grease is
applied to the wheels, some of it is released to the track and
the surrounding area.
Special grease mats are designed to capture excess grease
while allowing the water to pass through. The mats also have the
added benefit of reducing maintenance by allowing easier
cleanup.
This is one control measure Calgary Transit has initiated to
reduce its potential impact on the environment.
