Grease Mats

“Grease applicators” located on the light rail track (LRT) apply grease to the wheels of a train to reduce wear on wheels and rails and reduce the noise level before a train enters a curve. When grease is applied to the wheels some of it is released to the track and the surrounding area.

To reduce the environmental impact from this activity, special grease mats have been installed at each grease applicator location on the LRT system. These mats are designed to capture any excess grease and reduce contaminating the surrounding environment. These grease mats have the added benefit of reducing maintenance by allowing easier clean up of these areas.
