Calgary Transit has diesel fuel storage tanks at all of its garage facilities. The diesel fuel is used to operate the bus fleet.

Victoria Park garage is located adjacent to the Elbow River and a potential release or spill during the transferring of diesel fuel could impact the storm sewer system and the Elbow River.

The solution was to install a shut off valve in the storm sewer. This valve has to be in the closed position before the storage tanks can be filled up with diesel fuel. The valve does not allow diesel fuel to enter the storm sewer if an accident should result in a major release or spill.
