Calgary Transit as your travel mode, Calgarians are
helping to preserve and enhance the quality of our natural
environment. In 2005, Calgary Transit transported 82 million customers who
took 119.5 million transit trips. If these 82.0 million
customers used their own vehicles at the occupancy rate
currently seen in the City (1.2 passengers per vehicle), it is
expected that these drivers would generate some 239,000 tonnes
of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions annually.
When
Calgary Transit vehicles transported these 82.0 million
customers, the buses produced 55,600 tonnes of emissions (CO2
and other greenhouse gases). Therefore in 2005, Calgary
Transit helped reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gases
by approximately 183,400 tonnes.
Strategies for Cleaner Air
The threat to our health and the
environment from air pollution can be reduced if Calgarians
change their travel behaviour and consider other alternatives.
This can be accomplished through a number of ways:
- increased use of public transit
- increased car-pooling, walking and cycling
- use of cleaner fuels
- provision of high-occupancy vehicle lanes
- performing regular maintenance checks/oil changes on
vehicles and having emission control systems checked
regularly
- giving up a second car (according to Environment Canada,
this can save about $600/month in after-tax dollars)
