Environment

Calgary Transit operates an integrated bus and Light Rail public transportation system serving over 94 million customers per year.

Over the past decade the population of Calgary has increased by 24% to over one million residents, whereas over the same period Calgary Transit’s ridership has increased 26%. Calgary Transit is considered one of the most successful public transportation systems in North America.

The success of public transportation in Calgary addresses three distinct themes of financial, social and environmental responsibility within the community.

Exercising environmental responsibility, from a public transportation perspective, can be broadly viewed as working consistently towards lessening the environmental impacts of urban travel. This is achieved by both increasing the public use of transit rather than private autos and decreasing the generation of greenhouse gases (GHG) through efficiently running Calgary Transit’s Operations.
