Calgary Transit and The Environment

The SOLARWALL® is another initiative Calgary Transit has taken to reduce our impact on the environment.

To reduce the amount of natural gas used to heat the bus storage and maintenance facilities; Calgary Transit installed a SOLARWALL® at Victoria Park, Anderson and Spring Gardens garages. The SOLARWALL® uses solar energy to heat the buildings. The SOLARWALL® is made of perforated metal cladding and is installed on the south-facing walls of the buildings. The system operates in a simple manner:

The dark coloured metal cladding is heated by solar radiation.

Outside air is drawn through specially designed tiny holes in the SOLARWALL®, extracting heat from the metal panels in the process. This warm fresh air is then distributed throughout the building.
