Each Calgary Transit garage has maintenance pits, which allow the mechanics access to the underside of the buses. Generally, round pot style light fixtures provide lighting in these pits. These fixtures are now being replaced by "light pipes" which provide constant light that eliminates dark spots or areas in the pits. 

The light pipes also provide a brighter work environment for the mechanics. These light pipes are more energy efficient than the pot lights they replace. They will be installed in a number of maintenance pits throughout Calgary Transit garage facilities.
