Breathe-Easy Vehicle Scrappage Program

Calgary Transit was a participant in the Breathe Easy Vehicle Scrappage Program that started in March 2002. The goal of the program was to remove 600 pre-1988 vehicles from Calgary streets.

The goal was quickly surpassed as 782 applications were received within 3 months of the startup of the program! The Breathe Easy technical evaluation found that over a three year period, the program would reduce smog-forming compounds (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides) by 803 tonnes or 1.5 tonnes per vehicle. The program also reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 2,889 tonnes or 5.39 tonnes per vehicle. These figures must be considered conservative as they factor in only work travel. If all travel is included (based on the British Columbia Scrap-It program), the emission reductions work out to 819 tonnes of smog-forming compounds, and 4,564 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

It is expected that the program sponsor – The Clean Air Strategic Alliance – will recommend continuing the program, provided funding is available.
